A field guide to growing up without growing apart

A Twenty-Somethingth Twin Tribute

The 7th of November is a special day to the Naughty Princesses, because both Sleeping Booty and I were born on this day, twenty-something years ago! We discovered our shared birthday early on in our friendship, and that, along with a few other similarities, spawned our “twinship.” So today, even though I’m thousands of miles away from my twin, I wanted to give her a shout-out and say Happy Birthday to Sleeping Booty, the twin sister I never had.
The Parent Trap has always been one of my favorite movies. I used to watch the classic version my mom had recorded off the TV, and then when the remake starring Lindsay Lohan came out, it was at the top of my birthday list that year. Both movies are great, because the story is so good. The twins, separated at birth, reunite when they attend the same summer camp. Even though they start out as enemies, they end up bonding and discover that they are actually long-lost sisters, whose parents split them up during a nasty divorce. Of course each girl is curious about the parent she’s never known, so they devise a plan to switch places (they’re identical of course), and hilarity ensues.
Growing up with two brothers and no sisters, this storyline always appealed to me. Maybe I had a secret twin out there somewhere, just waiting to meet me! Well, as it turns out, I did.
Although Sleeping Booty and I are very different, we shared certain things in common, including our birthday, that helped us bond right away when we met during our freshman year of college. We started calling ourselves twins, which filled that nostalgic, pint-sized Lindsay Lohan shaped hole in my heart.

double the cuteness, double the fun!

Since then we’ve celebrated our mutual birthday together every year, until this year, when we find ourselves separated by thousands of miles once again. You see, our real-life parents weren’t so easily trapped–we had to go our separate ways eventually. You know, it’s probably good for twins to get some time apart, so I’m happy Sleeping Booty will have a day all to herself this year, to celebrate however she likes (I totally stole the show last year by getting engaged on our birthday…sorry twin!)

But I still can’t help thinking of this day as “our birthday,” and I’m glad. I know my twin is out there, and she’ll be happy today. So this twin tribute is for you, Sleeping Booty. Happy Twenty-Somethingth! And even though we’re adults, remember never to grow up too fast…
